  • Writing Workshop – We will continue writing realistic fiction stories. We will become series writers by writing many books with the same main character.​

    • Word Work- Students will learn how to spell words that include consonant digraphs(clusters): sh, ch, wh, and th. (ship, chip, white, path) 

  • Math – Mathematicians will continue their numeracy unit with numbers up to 120.​

    • Fast Facts – Addition to 18

  • Science – Scientists will investigate external characteristics of animals.

  • Reading Workshop –Readers continue preparations for Reading Restaurant by practicing rereading books to work on fluency and expression.

  • Writing Workshop –Writers will combine our knowledge of letter writing with writing our opinions and giving reasons to convince our readers to share our opinions. 

  • Math –Mathematicians will practicing adding & subtracting 20 with story problems.

    • Fast Facts – Students will review all fast facts done up to this point.

  • Science –Scientists will begin learning about interdependency by studying food chains!

  • Social Studies – Students will continue our study of Texas and its symbols.

Thursday, March 9th at 2:10pm is the opening of Reading Restaurant! Please mark your calendar for this event as it is such a fun and special part of first grade!

 

Please send in 1 tablecloth (plastic or cloth) and an apron (kid-sized or adult) for your child to use that day. Please put them in a labeled bag.

 

 

February 13th - 17th

  • Reading Workshop –Readers will begin exploring how media can have different purposes and uses different techniques (like sound and movement) to get their reader’s attention.

  • Writing Workshop –Writers will continue writing our opinions and giving reasons to convince our readers to share our opinions. 

  • Math –Mathematicians will have fun discovering 3 Dimensional shapes!​

    • Fast Facts – Students will practice double facts and Make 10

    • Examples: 2 + 2 = 4 and 3 + 7 = 10

  • Science –Scientists will continue studying and exploring rocks and soils. End of Unit test will be this week!

Valentines Day Information

  • This year we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Febr. 14th as a class only. There will not be an organized class party.

  • The students will be exchanging Valentines in their classroom. This is optional.

50’s Day First grade celebrates the 50th day of school by dressing in 50’s style clothing and having an old fashioned sock hop! Dressing in 50’s attire is not required, just a fun way to celebrate the 50th day of school. Some ideas: Boys can wear white t-shirts, jeans rolled up, leather jackets and have their hair slicked back. Helpful hints:

We are beginning addition and subtraction. Practice counting on objects to add (3 goldfish plus 2 more; 3, 4, 5 goldfish).

 

Review reading strategies at home and encourage your child to use one if they come to a hard word (Flippy the Dolphin, Listening Lion, Lips the Fish, Skippy the Kangaroo, Chunky Monkey, Eagle Eye).

 

Please be reviewing reading sight words. These should be automatic for your child to read within three seconds. This will help them to quickly identify words during reading so they can begin to focus more on making sense of the text (reading for meaning).

If you would like to send in money for your child to purchase items at school store please do the following:

  • Please send in cash or only a few coins.

  • Please put the money in a bag with your students name and teacher name on the front.

  • Please label the amount of money in the bag on the front.

Helpful hints:

We are working on extending our stories. Have your child write a small moment story at home for extra practice.

 

We are working on building numbers with tens and ones. Have your student draw a number using their tens and ones.

    We will have a very tight sitting arrangement.

  • Meet the teacher from 5:00 - 6:30! Come and get to know your First grade teacher!

August 22nd:

  • First day of school! Please arrive between 8:00 - 8:20 a,m.

  • Parents are allowed to walk their child back the first 3 days of school!
